Broker's Comments
This is the last existing Solent One Design still racing on the Solent. 23 were built between 1896 & 1897 for members of the Royal Yacht Squadron and the Island Sailing Club. Built at Whites of Cowes and constructed from pitch pine on oak frames with a lead keel.
The yacht benefits from an extensive refit in 2010 when she was striped to bare wood inside and out, epoxied and filled with epoxy putty, sheathed outside only to the waterline with bi-axial glass cloth. Then filled and faired, spray-painted in Awlgrip Oyster White.
Her original spars are constructed from Oregon Pine and have been lovingly kept, the varnish certainly ‘gleams’. She benefits from an extensive sail wardrobe will allow you to enter into any classic boat race. Powered by a 10hp Yanmar 1GM diesel engine with an approximate fuel consumption of less than one litre per hour.
The interior aboard is very basic for racing; sail locker forward of the mast separated from the cabin by a bulkhead with entrance. The cabin has twin berths with upholstery, to starboard aft there is a navigation table, draws and locker beneath. On the port side there is a galley, with sink and storage, the stove and gas bottle have been removed for racing.
This is an opportunity to obtain part of maritime history with a great racing record, viewing is highly recommended for any classic boat lover…
2012/2013 refit:
New Sitka Spruce Mast, boom and gaff
New stainless steel and running rigging
Woodwork re varnished
Construction
The spars are original Oregon pine. They are rigged with stainless steel standing rigging (checked annually) and with modern cordage for halyards, sheets and lines.
